At the time of the great wave of immigration from the Catholic countries of Europe, there was an ongoing undercurrent of resentment about the "Romanization" of the public school system. Elsewhere on this site we have "Puck" and "Judge" cartoons with a more mainstream (i.e. Protestant) view on the subject, but the truth is that in their views on the Pope they weren't much different than the Atheists, as you can see by comparing the images.
